Five reasons to start swimming

If you’re looking for a full body workout that burns a lot of calories and doesn’t involve having to brave the cold outdoors, then give swimming a go!

At our Manchester campus, we’re lucky enough to have an Olympic sized swimming pool right on our doorstep at the Manchester Aquatics Centre. And, to give you a little bit of help, we’ve included swimming as part of our Active Campus programme, meaning you can swim for free every Tuesday and Thursday during term time between 12:00pm and 1:00pm. So, with this in mind and the fact that swimming is an excellent way to get fit, here are five reasons why we think swimming might just be your new go-to form of exercise – all year round!

It’s a full body workout

Swimming works every muscle in your body, meaning that a quick dip exercises everything from your abs to your arms and your back to your legs. And that’s all without having to pick up a weight!

You don’t need to splash out on expensive equipment

All you really need is a swimsuit and maybe a cap and goggles! Even if you want to add another piece of equipment, like a kickboard, the Manchester Aquatics Centre has some on poolside for you to use.

It’s a fantastic way to burn calories

Swimming is one of the biggest calorie burners. It varies from person to person, depending on your weight, but generally just 30 minutes of swimming can burn over 250 calories.

It’s good for your joints

Unlike some other cardio workouts, swimming is a low-impact activity, which means if you’re new to exercise, overweight, or have joint problems it’s an activity that is guaranteed not to put any extra pressure on your joints.

It’s fun and refreshing

On your own, swimming is a great way to relax and reflect on your day. With friends, swimming can be a great way to socialise. The bottom line is that swimming is a great way to get a guaranteed endorphin kick and you will always come out feeling refreshed!

If you fancy going for a swim we have FREE swimming sessions available through our Active Campus scheme every Tuesday and Thursday available between 12:00pm and 1:00pm at the Manchester Aquatics centre. 

Simply bring your staff or student ID along and show it to our activator, who will be waiting for you in the foyer!
