Five perfect activities for ‘non-sporty’ people!

Trust us on this one – we know that familiar sinking feeling that happens deep in the pit of your stomach when someone mentions the words ‘team sport’.

It’s not for everyone, and that’s why this year’s free Active Campus programme has been designed to offer a range of classes and activities that are more about ‘me’ and less about ‘team’.

PiYo

Dubbed by the Telegraph as ‘the work-out that won’t make you cry’, PiYo is a kind fusion of the best bits of Pilates and Yoga, providing a fun and gentle, yet challenging class that tones your muscles, helps you burn lots of calories and gives you a jolly good stretch.

Like the sound of this? Pop along to the Birley Sports Hall every Thursday between 6:15pm and 7:00pm.

Rave Fitness

Blending dance moves and stretches (we’re particularly partial to the three minutes of squats that sneak their way into each session), Rave Fitness delivers this all to the beat of 90s-inspired dance music.  So, whether you’re a seasoned Zumba lover or you dance like your dad, this class is guaranteed to help you meet new people, burn some calories and leave the session with a huge smile on your face.

Sorry guys, but our Rave Fitness classes are a secret between us and our lovely female students!

Fancy giving it a go? Come along to our class at The Union every Thursday between 5:15pm and 6:00pm.  And, if you want some extra brownie points, you can bounce across to PiYo afterwards.

Jogging Club

We’ve all had that pang of jealousy as a friend breezes in and speaks the words, ‘I’ve just been for a quick jog’ without a single bead of sweat on their forehead.  Don’t be put off – you too can be that person!

Our jogging club meets every Thursday evening and is a sure fire way to help you build up your overall stamina and help you on your way to running 5k.  Our club has dedicated run activators who will help you every step of the way.

Meet our club at All Saints Park every Thursday at 4:45pm.

Swimming

We’re big advocates of swimming here at MMU Sport and not just because we’re lucky enough to have the Manchester Aquatics Centre right on our doorstep.  Swimming is the perfect way to clear your head, relax and reflect, while burning calories and building up your stamina.  It also is a sure-fire way to make you feel refreshed and revitalised before you tackle the rest of your day with a relaxed (smug) look on your face.

We’ve got two free lunchtime swimming sessions every week on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 12:00pm and 1:00pm at the Manchester Aquatics Centre on Oxford Road.

Circuits

We know, we know.  Circuits have a nasty little way of conjuring up memories of school day bleep tests.  Put those memories to the back of your mind: our circuits classes are simply designed to help you fit in as many different exercises in a short amount of time, tone your muscles and pack in your 30 minutes of fitness.  We personally think they are great for people who like to a mix it up by switching to a different exercise every five minutes.

We’ll be running our Circuits class at the Birley Sports Hall every Tuesday evening between 6:00pm and 7:00pm and on Mondays between 5:00pm and 6:00pm at our Cheshire Sports Centre.

If none of these take your fancy or fit with your schedule, then we’ve plenty more free activities on offer.  Visit our website to find out more.
