Carmen’s Boxing Blog; Week One!

We have a guest blog entry from MMU Facilities’ Communications Coordinator, Carmen Shallcross, who has is taking part in our Get Into boxing course!

As a dynamic but disciplined sport, boxing actually seemed like a good match for me: not too much running around and the chance to deliver a good punch.

I had always wanted to try boxing, but I felt very self-conscious and intimidated by the thought of trying to take up a sport which is traditionally seen as masculine and aggressive and, of course, the necessary discipline, power and technique behind it.

MMU Sport’s Get into programme gave me the perfect chance to finally give boxing a go. I had my doubts: would I be the only female in the class? Would I be the only one who had never put on some boxing gloves?

I was the only female. But at least everyone was a beginner!

The class proved fun and gripping. After an unsuccessful skipping warm up, we got right into it. We were shown the basics: stance, guard and punches (jab, cross, uppercut and hook) and, in pairs, we spent most of the lesson practising combinations, correcting our guard and stance.


We were all encouraged to give it a go, taking turns punching and wearing pads. One of my biggest fears was not being strong enough or getting hurt; it turns out apparently I don’t have a weak punch (this could have just been an encouraging comment!) and strength does not actually come from the arms (a relief!), but really depends on a good stance.

It was great to switch off for an hour and take part in an activity that took me out of my comfort zone and, I think surprisingly, I found quite inspiring! Our coach Kevin’s calm tone and patience definitely helped me feel at ease. Overall, a great first lesson and I’m very much looking forward to next week!
