Tom Tries: Badminton

We sent our very own Sports Development Assistant, Tom Jones (no, not that one!) down to our Active Campus badminton session. Watch what Tom got up to and read how he was feeling after the session!

On Monday, I attended the Active Campus badminton session. I decided to go straight after work, the session started at 4:30pm and ended at 6:00pm at Sugden Sports Centre. All I brought was my trainers and student ID; I didn’t need to bring any racquets or equipment as MMU Sport provided a big bag full that can be borrowed for the session!

The activators, Sam and Wendy were on hand to offer tips, advice and general coaching. They also put people into games and made sure everything ran smoothly.

I’ve only played badminton in high school, I played once for the school team and I know all the rules from officiating games as part of my A level PE. However, I quickly realised that seven years down the line I couldn’t even hit the shuttle! As you can see by the video, I was a bit rusty and have awful hand eye coordination! Luckily, the sessions are open to anyone of all abilities and the activators swiftly helped me improve my technique, so I didn’t feel too bad about myself!

What surprised me the most was the turnout for this session with over 45 people attending! It was good to meet new people and play against strangers. There were even a few members of the badminton team there but the majority were just students playing for fun! I played Babu, a member of staff who is ridiculously good at badminton. Playing him clearly highlighted how bad I was at the game. Once again, thanks again to the activators they made me realise that you can’t just stand still on the court and you actually have to move around.

I thoroughly enjoyed the session and would recommend it to everyone, even if you have never played badminton before! It is a very easy sport to pick up. The sessions are great way to get your hours of exercise in for the week and they’re free!
