Match Report: MMU Netball 1s make it three from three!

Wednesday saw our Netball 1st team continue to dominate the BUCS Northern 2A after a fantastic victory over Edge Hill.

Sport Scholar and 1st team shooter, Chloe Shepherd, brings us the match report.

We welcomed Edge Hill 1st team to the Sugden Sports Centre hoping to keep our impressive start to the season going but without the calming influence of the injured Gabby Marshall who was here to cheer on the team.

The team going into the first quarter were Chloe Shepherd (GS), Fran Duffy (GA), Rachel Towell (WA), Eliza Morgan (C), Buhle Dubazana (WD), Bekah Airey (GD) and Nancy Thomson (GK).

We went out hard from the first whistle with the defence turning over ball after ball and feeding the shooters who did the business under the post with help from our superb mid-court players, winning the first quarter 18-5.

There were no changes as we moved into the second quarter but the intensity dropped slightly after the lightning start we had made but we still managed to win the quarter extending the lead 33-12 at half time.

Into the third quarter, and we rang the changes with Kate Thomas (WA) and Ruth Anderson (WD) coming into the game. We started the quarter slowly with possession being squandered and Edge Hill upping their game as well, a timely “injury” timeout by Chloe allowed the coach to dispense some words of wisdom and calm the team down, on resumption normal services was resumed and we extended our lead to 44-19, with Ruth turning over ball and Kate feeding well into the circle.

Into the final quarter and we set our shooters the task of getting to 60 goals and the defence keeping Edge Hill to under 25 goals, turning over Edge Hills centre and the defence of Nancy and Bekah yet again getting ball after ball against a frustrated Edge Hill attack we went on to dominate the remainder of the game running out comfortable 61-23 winners so both “goals” attained.

Edge Hill gave player of the match to our Goal Shooter, Chloe Shepherd.

Next week we are at home at 16:30 in the cup hoping to keep the impressive form going.
