#BUCSWednesday: this week’s focus games!

It’s an extra special #BUCSWednesday this week, as we take our place as the BUCS University in Focus!

So, this week, we didn’t just want to focus on one match of the day.  Instead, here are our picks of this week’s home cup games!

Last season’s Cup campaign was an exciting one for MMU Sport as we took seven teams to compete in the BUCS Northern Conference Cup and Plate finals at Durham University, making us one of the best-represented institutions in the whole campaign!

With this season’s cup campaign already off to a good start, here are our top eight home fixtures to look out for tomorrow:

1:            Women’s Tennis 1sts vs Edge Hill 1sts

Women's Tennis presentationLast season saw our women’s tennis 1st team finish in second place in the Northern Conference Cup, facing Northumbria in a tough final.  This year, the team are setting their sights on lifting that Cup, as they move into their first round on Wednesday, against Edge Hill 1st.

12:30pm, Virgin Active Lancashire, Middleton

2:            Men’s Hockey 2nds vs Chester 2nds

It’s double home hockey action for us this week, as our men’s hockey 2nd team welcome Chester 2nds to the Vagrants Ground in Crewe, as they look to improve on last year’s cup campaign.

Our men’s rugby union 2nd team are another team enjoying an unbeaten season so far.  Based on their league performance so far, we’re predicting good things for them in the Northern Conference Plate as well, as they prepare to welcome Bangor to the Vagrants Ground.

4:            Women’s Football 2nds vs York 2nds

24362601In 2013/14, our women’s football 2nd team earned the Northern Conference Cup title after a nail-biting 3 – 2 victory over Leeds Beckett.  After last year saw them face a tough Liverpool 1st team early on in the campaign, the team are going into this year’s competition with the aim to recover that title.

1:00pm, Sandbach FC, Cheshire

5:            Men’s Hockey 1sts vs Newcastle 2nds

Men's Hockey

Looking to better last year’s performance, our men’s hockey 1st team move into the first round of the cup this weekend.  The team face Newcastle 2nd in a game that, if both teams’ performances so far are anything to go by, will be quite evenly matched.

2:00pm, Timperley Sports Club, Timperley

6:            Women’s Badminton 1sts vs Bradford 1sts

After a walkover was awarded in their favourite, our women’s badminton 1st team only have one game under their belts this season as they move into their first cup game of the season against Bradford 1st.

2:00pm, Sugden Sports Centre, Manchester

7:            Men’s Basketball 1sts vs Sheffield 2nds

Also unbeaten in the Northern 2A, our men’s basketball 1st team are looking to carry on their good form so far this season, as they welcome Sheffield 2nds to Manchester.  In the first round of the cup, the team secured a convincing 80 – 50 victory over Hull, and we’re in no doubt that they’ll be looking for a repeat performance.

2:15pm, the Sugden Sports Centre, Manchester

8:            Netball 1sts vs Sheffield Hallam 2nds

Our netball 1st team are a force to be reckoned with this year, with the team boasting five sport scholars, including England Netball U21 captain, Gabby Marshall.  Currently unbeaten in the Northern 2A, and after a 50 – 11 victory over Durham in the first round of the cup, Wednesday’s game against Sheffield Hallam should be a good one.

4:30pm, the Sugden Sports Centre, Manchester
