Campus League Roundup: Week Three

Three is the magic number and week three of Campus League 11-a-side football certainly proved a magical one!

Highlight game of the week

After missing the first two game weeks, it was the first game of the season for newly formed team Lallana in Pyjamas as they took on the league leaders Birley FC.

Before the game started however, a minutes silence was observed to mark the remembrance of the past and present members of the armed forces.

Both teams started very strong. But after a quick attack, Birley FC player Harry Young opens up the scoring after cutting back down the wing to finesse the ball into the bottom left corner, which the player later described to us as “an absolute peach”.

From then onwards Birley FC were constantly on the attack. After another run down the wing, they managed to whip the ball into the box for one of their players to go for an audacious left footed volley that pinged off the post for a Lallana in Pyjamas defender to clear.

Instantly Lallana in Pyjamas started to look more comfortable working as a team and it paid off after some attractive football, the ball was played to midfielder, Matt Goodson, who took a quick look up and pinged the ball into the back of the net. Which we can confirm was a screamer. One Birley FC player blasted the team’s manager and his poor decisions stating, “You’re worse than Van Gaal!”

The Birley FC Manager, worse than Van Gaal?

Despite conceding a goal, Birley FC looked determined to carry on and push for three points, which they proved attack after attack. The work eventually paid off after Birley made a strike at the keeper but unfortunately for the goalkeeper he missed the ball and Birley ended up taking the lead. 2-1.

After another attack, Birley FC managed to slot the ball into the bottom left corner making the score 3-1. Birley FC seemed to have found a member of the hit early 2000’s band Blazin’ Squad as one of their players managed to blaze the ball over the crossbar of an open goal from a yard out!

As the half time whistle was called the game stood at 3-1 to Birley FC. For the first 20 minutes of the second half, not a lot happened as both teams struggled to make the most of their chances in the final third. Eventually, Birley FC player Jordan Collins manages to break his duck after dribbling the ball around the defender and slotting the ball away from a tight angle. 4-1.

Shortly after gaining some new confidence from his first goal, Jordan Collins managed to slot the ball away again to double his scoring tally. 5-1

Despite conceding, Lallana in Pyjamas were still looking to attack and made some very good breaks but were unlucky to get the end product.

The game finished with an 8-1 win to Birley FC. Despite the score Lallana in Pyjamas still put up a great display and they look like a team who can become a real threat to other teams in the league once they get a couple more games under their belts.
