Our boxing apprentice, Carmen, is back to tell us all about how she got on in week five on our Get Into boxing course.
So I didn’t get to cheat during this week’s session as I was the odd one out and had to partner up with the coach.
I spotted the instructor for our session once I walked into the gym, which brought back painful memories from week 2, but after a manageable warm-up, we started boxing combinations.
Our skill training this week included two new moves for us: a jab to the body and leaning away. There is no feeling comfortable in boxing; there is always something to correct and you can always throw a stronger punch.
I have never really understood why people do not mind coaches yelling at them, exercise and sport are hobbies for me so being shouted at isn’t my idea of fun, but when you are pushed out of your comfort zone, it is satisfying to see you can achieve more than what you expected!
On the plus side of having the coach holding the pads, I did benefit from some one-to-one training, so I can, with no doubt say, my uppercuts aren’t too bad, but I definitely have a lousy jab.
Unfortunately, our Get Into boxing course is now sold but if you want to try boxing on our Manchester, you can through the MMU Boxing Club.
If you fancy giving boxing a go on our Cheshire campus, you can through our free Active Campus boxing sessions! The sessions are run by our own MMU Cheshire Boxing Club. Simply pop over to Gymnasium every Monday between 5:00pm and 6:00pm and every Friday between 6:00pm and 7:00pm. You can find more information on our website.
