#BUCSWednesday: our teams progress to the quarter finals

It’s the last Cup week this term and, boy, was it a good one!

Here’s our highlights from yesterday’s games!

MOTD: Men’s Rugby Union 2s 37 – 17 UCLan 2s

There’s absolutely no stopping our men’s rugby union 2s, who are dominating the Northern 4A.  Yesterday’s game saw the team welcome bottom of the table UCLan to Crewe Vagrants in the last 16 of the Northern Conference Plate.

Our team took an early 10 – 0 lead after a fantastic try and conversion from Lewis Stockman.  Despite the visitors attempting a comeback, our team were spurred on to earn two incredible tries in the space of two minutes to go up 22 – 3 just before half time.

Returning to the pitch half time, UCLan made a valiant attempt to try and get the better of our team, but it was largely unsuccessful, with the score standing at 37 – 17 by the time the final whistle blew.

The team will face Northern 5B team, Sheffield 3s next, in the quarter finals of the competition in February.

Women’s Football 1s 5 – 1 Nottingham 1s

It’s been a tough start to the season for our women’s football team in the Northern 1A after earning promotion last season.  Yesterday’s game painted a different picture though, as the team welcomed Nottingham 1s to our Platt Lane Sports Complex in the first round of the BUCS Trophy.

An incredible first half saw the team go 3 – 0 up, with play including an incredible goal from our sport scholar, Emily Hollinshead, who ran the full length of the pitch to score unaided.

By the time the full time whistle went, a euphoric team celebrated a 5 – 1 victory, a spot in the next round of the Trophy and their first, extremely well deserved, win of the season.

Men’s Hockey 1s and 2s

It was another double celebration for our men’s hockey 1s and 2s yesterday, who both claimed their places in the quarter finals of the Northern Conference Cup in February.

Competing at our neighbour’s Armitage site yesterday, our men’s 1s welcomed fellow Northern 2A team, UCLan, to the pitch.  A dominant first half saw our boys lead 4 – 0 at half time.  Despite UCLan attempting a fight back in the second half, the game finished with an impressive 9 – 4 scoreline for our team.

Down at Crewe Vagrants, our men’s 2s welcomed Northern 4B team, York 2s to the pitch.  To everyone’s shock, York put the first scores on the doors.  Undeterred, a superb reverse shot from Ben Morris levelled the playing field, giving our team the motivation they need to proceed to a 3 – 1 victory.

If both teams keep doing this well, we could be looking at a blue and orange final in this year’s Conference Cup final – watch this space!

Women’s Lacrosse 11 – 6 Lancaster 1s

lax

It’s been a tough start to the season for our women’s lacrosse team, who face strong opposition in the BUCS Northern 2A.  Yesterday’s Northern Conference Cup game was a completely different story for our team though, as they powered ahead to a fantastic 11 – 6 victory over Lancaster!  The result earns the team a sport in the quarter finals in February, where they face Durham 4s.

Women’s Basketball 1s 120 – 28 Liverpool 2s

It was a great game for our women’s basketball 1s yesterday as they welcomed Liverpool 2s to the Cheshire Sports Centre in the Northern Conference Cup.  It was an incredible final score for the team (102 – 28!), which cements their place in the quarter finals in February, where they face the tougher, Liverpool 1s.

Huge congratulations to all of our clubs who competed yesterday – another great Wednesday!  Roll on next week!
