Still unbeaten this season, yesterday’s game saw our Netball 1s earn their spot in the quarter final of the BUCS Northern Conference Cup after another incredible performance against our local rivals, University of Manchester.
Our sport scholar, Chloe Shepherd, brings us the match report from yesterday’s game!
Yesterday, we welcomed our closest rivals, University of Manchester 2nds to the Sugden Sports Centre in the latest round of the cup. We were hoping to keep our excellent start to the season going. We welcomed back to the starting seven our two England U21 players, Gabby Marshall and Rebecca Airey. The starting seven were Nancy Thompson GK; Becca Airey GD; Gabby Marshall WD; Rachel Towell C; Kate Thomas WA; Fran Duffy GA and Chloe Shepherd GS.
We scored from our first centre and straight away turned over UoM from their centre, which took us into an early lead that we never looked at giving back! The excellent defence of Nancy and Bekah and the mid-courters were turning over balls with ease and feeding the shooters with Fran in particular sinking balls from the edge of the circle with Chloe taking advantage of the excellent feeds in from Kate and Rach we saw out the quarter 18-7.
Changes in the second and third quarters saw the team rotate allowing everyone on court to try various combinations all of which worked well, with Buhle Dubazana and Ruth Anderson picking up endless hard fought interceptions in defence.
Eliza Morgan created excellent play in attack as our lead extended in each quarter as all players worked seamlessly with each quarter scores 34-16 at half time and 49-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Into the final quarter, the team was given the challenge of reaching 70 goals the whole squad were challenging for turn over ball of UoM with the players on the side-lines shouting encouragement and keeping up a running score count. Into the last minute we still required three goals to reach the magic 70.
We scored off our centre: Gabby turned the ball over from their centre along with an excellent tip to Kate Thomas and fed Fran who slotted the ball away, with time running out the ball was played long to Chloe who scored with less than 10 seconds left to reach the 70 goals that were set. Winning the game 70-30. With shooting stats of 86% UoM gave POM to Goal Shooter, Chloe Shepherd.
Great team effort and we are now through to the last 16 of the cup as well as retaining our unbeaten start to the season!
