In this week’s Spotlight On… we’re getting to know our women’s tennis team a little bit better!
Last season was an exciting one for the team, as they earned promotion into the BUCS Northern 2A and finished second in the Northern Conference Cup after a tough final against an extremely strong Northumbria team.
There’s been no stopping our team so far this season. Currently sat in second place in the Northern 2A, after enjoying some exceptional victories over teams including University of Manchester, Edge Hill and Bangor.
It’s a similar story in the Conference Cup for the team, earning their place in the quarter finals in February after their game against Chester on Wednesday 25th November went to knockout stages, with our team winning 2 – 0.
We spoke to women’s captain, Charlotte Sykes, about the best thing of being in the tennis club and their plans for the rest of the season.
What’s the best part about being in your sports club?
“Making new friends and going out together. The wider tennis club includes the women’s and men’s teams, and this year we’re delighted to have around 20 members. It’s great to be able to train together with each other and compete on a weekly basis.”
What were the highs and lows from last season?
“Definitely getting to the final of the cup and winning the league! Off the court, we also became really close friends.”
What are your hopes for 2015/16?
“There’s definitely some potential for the women’s team to get promoted this year, and our men’s team are definitely looking to do this.
“We’re also looking to increase links with other tennis clubs to get some indoor training times, and hopefully be able to increase the numbers of the club.”
