In this week’s Spotlight On… we’re getting to know our Manchester based netball club a little bit better!
This year, the club boasts 52 members across five teams, all of which compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league and cup competitions.
For our first team, it’s been an absolutely incredible first half of the season, which has seen the team dominate the Northern 2A and remain unbeaten in the league and cup competitions.
We spoke to club captain, Nancy Thompson, about last year’s season and their hopes for this one.
What’s the best part about being in your sports club?
“The close knit bond you create with the whole team, as you share your passion for the game whilst creating lasting friendships.”
How did your club do last year on and off the court?
“Last year it was great to see the new freshers combine easily into the club and see such great friendships made.
“On the court, we saw our first team finish second in the league, preparing us for what will hopefully be a first place finish this year. We also saw our third team (fifth overall) get promoted!”
What were the highs and lows from last season?
“Last season’s highs were having three sport scholars to our first team, as well as an intake of great freshers.
“Another high was seeing the rightly deserved promotion of our third team in the BUCS league. We also got chosen as a priority sport, giving us the support we need to further improve as a club.
“A low was when our first team lost by six in the quarter finals of the cup to Chester. However, the last game of the season we beat our rivals at home to gain second place in the league.”
What are your hopes for 2015/16?
“Our hopes for this season are that our first team continue their unbeaten streak to win the double!
“All of our other teams are set to be safe in their leagues, with some pushing for second place too. Off pitch we are all very much looking forward to tour and spending time with the wider AU.”
What on and off the court activities do you have coming up for your club?
“We have our Disco Dodgeball fundraiser on Friday 11th December, where we hope to see all AU clubs showing off their skills.
“When we return next term, the first team have their quarter final cup match to win to continue onto the final!”
