video Tom Tries: Dodgeball

Our Sports Development Assistant, Tom Jones, went down to our Active Campus dodgeball session on our Manchester campus to learn the all important five D’s of dodgeball!

I decided to give our Friday dodgeball session a go down at Sugden Sports Centre after work. This is the first Active Campus dodgeball session I’ve been to and won’t be my last. Alex, our dodgeball Activator, who has good links with Manchester Bees dodgeball club, made sure the session was good fun!

As I’m writing this, my shoulder and back are in agony due to the amount of throwing! It’s a great workout too from the constant sprinting, throwing and dodging. As you can see in the video there were some great shots from people, the first game I clearly wasn’t aware what was going on and was hit out in world record time.

Dodgeball is not the most well known of sports, I played it a lot in high school and when I’ve been delivering inductions in the past, so I’m well aware of the rules. The aim of the game is to not be hit by the ball. As Patches O’Houlihan once said in the great movie “Dodgeball”, “Remember the 5 D’s of dodgeball: Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge!”

Like all the other Active Campus sessions, all you need to wear is your sportswear and bring your student ID, which Alex will scan at the start of the session. All the equipment is provided and is totally beginner friendly. If you’ve not been down to our Active Campus session, I suggest you do!

Pop over to Sugden Sports Centre every Tuesday 7:00pm-8:00pm and Friday 5:30pm-6:30pm. For more information on our Active Campus programme, visit our website.

You can also enter your own team into our dodgeball tournament as part of our tournament week on the 8th December. You find out more information here.
