#MakeSportHappen: Meet our Sport Volunteering club of the month, men’s basketball!

This month, we’re excited to announce that we have not one, but two clubs of the month!  First up, let us introduce you to our Manchester-based men’s basketball club!

Basketball

It’s been a great start to their 2015/16 British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) campaign on the court!  The first team are currently unbeaten in the Northern 2A and are also in the quarter finals for the Northern Conference Cup, and the third team compete in the Northern 4A, after losing out just one game so far this season.

Basketball2

Boasting 31 members overall, the club is run by chairman, Daniel Kimpton, vice chair, Jack Shepherd, treasurer, Frederico Santos and social secretary, Akeem Thomas.  These are also joined by team captains, Andrew Abendstern and Luke Hilton, and the club meet monthly to cover the club’s affairs and discuss problems, and also meet regularly with their coach to ensure they are always moving in the right direction.

What sort of activities have the club been doing this month?

“This month, a couple of the team got involved with the Greater Manchester College Games, undertaking some refereeing and helping make sure the event runs smoothly.   The event was a huge success with the team getting praise from the colleges themselves for their effort.”

What is your favourite or stand out moment of the month?

“Our stand out moment of the month was finally taking the crown for the best team in Manchester with a nine point victory over the University of Manchester!”

Why should other clubs log their volunteering hours?

“Not only does logging your hours get you a free t-shirt, it can also get you a bursary for courses. So make sure you log your hours!”
