Tom Tries: Volleyball

Our Sports Development Assistant, Tom Jones, went down to one of our Active Campus volleyball sessions on our Manchester campus to learn all about the sport and has told us how he got on.

In the last week of Active Campus in December, I gave our new Thursday Volleyball session a go. We only originally had one volleyball session a week on a Friday but due to the popularity demand we put on another!

I’ve never been a big volleyball person. Last time I played it, I was on holiday in a pool in Benicassim. This time I wasn’t on holiday but indoors at Sugden Sports Centre. The session was great fun! At the start Wendy, our dedicated Volleyball Activator, got us doing some warm up drills. I was trying to pick up and learn all the different types of hits you can use. I’ve always struggled with the ‘set’ hit, as you can see in the video. After the warm ups and a bit of practise we were put into one big game, it was a great laugh and it was pretty exciting with everyone jumping around trying to stop the ball from hitting the floor!

It’s a very easy game to pick up, when the ball crosses over the line a team has a maximum of 3 hits to get it over the net and can’t go out the green line! Everyone there were of a mixture of abilities but everyone helps everyone out giving each other pointers, which I found useful! Unfortunately, my team lost the match, and shock I was the one that did a foul serve to lose the match.

I’d definitely recommend attending the volleyball sessions. All you need to do is turn up to Sugden Sports Centre with your student ID and have it scanned at the start of the session. Wear comfortable sportswear!
