Campus League Roundup: Week Nine

It’s week nine of our Campus League football and following on from the shocks of last week’s games we went into this game week with a high amount of anticipation!

Highlight game of the week

Our highlight game of the week was between second place Cambridge FC against fifth place Greystar United. A win in this game could help Cambridge FC close down the gap between themselves and first place Birley FC who were three points ahead at the top of the table.

As the game kicked off Cambridge FC dominated possession as their players found space around the Greystar United players. The first goal didn’t take too long to come around as after Cambridge FC won a throw in they managed to throw it long to their player, Christy McCorry, who managed to slot it past the keeper to make it 1-0.

Cambridge FC carried on pressing Greystar United playing total football and dominating them on the left wing. The second goal soon came around as after another quick attack on the left wing, Greystar United fouled the attacking Cambridge FC player conceding a free kick. The free kick was whipped into the box and the Greystar United goalkeeper managed to catch it for to fumble, dropping the ball as it rolled to the feet of Cambridge FC player, Jay who managed to tap the ball into the net. 2-0.

The Referee shortly blew the whistle to call for half time.

There seemed to be a lot of confusion within the game as both teams were wearing very similar colours, which the Greystar United captain believed was partly the reason for his team being 2-0 down at half time. Fortunately, for Greystar United our Activator managed to dig out some bibs for his team.

To be honest whether it was a change of tactics in the second half or the introduction of the bibs Greystar United looked like a completely different team in the second half!

Greystar United’s drastic change of form was soon rewarded as they went down the left wing their player, Callum thunders the ball into the goal causing the ball to go through the side netting, ending what was a poor display in the final third. The referee was unsure if the ball went into the net or if it went wide but a sheepish look Cambridge FC admitted that it was a goal. 2-1.

Cambridge FC did not let the last goal get them down as they went on attack after attack, controlling the tempo of the game. They soon turned this around after their player Marcus took a shot from outside of the box for the ball to thunder into the bottom corner of the goal! An absolute peach of a goal! 3-1.

Cambridge FC weren’t done there as a little bit later they played a through ball to Christie McCorry who forced the Greystar United keeper to come off his line and he dribbled it past the keeper, cuts back and taps the ball passed the Greystar defender who was on the goal line and into the goal. A brilliant Messi-esque goal to score and for the player to double his number of goals for the game, making the score 4-1.

The game finished 4-1 to Cambridge FC who carry on their promotion challenge as well as trying to win the league 2 title as they still have a game in hand which could see them overtake Birley FC! Can Cambridge FC win the league 2 title? Look’s like we’ll have to wait and see, but we’re sure it’s going to be a pretty close title challenge!
