There were a few rearranged league games this week, but it was also an important cup week. There were some fantastic results to help some of our teams progress to the next round!
Here’s our highlights from yesterday’s #BUCSWednesday
MOTD: Men’s Hockey 1st v Leeds Men’s 2nd
In our Match of the Day, our men’s hockey 1st team faced Leeds men’s 2nd team in the quarterfinals of the conference cup. The game was a close battle throughout, but our team were able to book their place in the semi-finals, with a 3-2 victory.
It was the visitors who were able to take the lead early on in the game, scoring within the first five minutes. Our team proceeded to put pressure on the opposition, and were rewarded after 20 minutes when they slotted home the equaliser. Within minutes, our team were able to take the lead, following a great spell of team play. Their joy was short lived, as the home team were unable to clear the ball away from danger, allowing the opposition to equalise just before half time.
Our team started the second half brightly, putting constant pressure on the opposition. It was not long before we were able to regain the lead, making the score line 3-2. Our team continued to play well and were unfortunate not to score again. The opposition stepped up during the last five minutes, putting pressure on our team, although they were unable to break through our defence. With seconds remaining, Leeds were awarded a penalty corner. However, the home team defence remained strong and following a critical clearance on the line, the full time whistle blew, leaving the home side elated. They have booked themselves a place in the semi-finals, where they will face Northumbria 1st team at home on Wednesday 2nd March.
Men’s Water Polo 1st v Edinburgh 2nd
Our men’s water polo 1st team were able to progress to the second round of the trophy competition, after a close game saw them beat Edinburgh on penalties. Our team were only able to travel with seven players, and the opposition were able to pile the pressure on early in the game, taking a 3-0 lead. Our team were able to fight back to make the half time score 7-6 to Edinburgh.
Our team continued to play well, and after some strong team play, they were able to level the score to make it 9-9 by the end of the third quarter. With both teams battling hard to secure the victory, each team gained another goal in the final quarter to make the final score 10-10.
Both teams proceeded to take their penalties well, with all penalty takers scoring their first four attempts. At 4-4, it was the home team who stepped up for the next penalty. Our sport-scholar, Dan Paddon, playing out of position in goal was able to make a fantastic save to deny the home side. Our team were then able to remain composed and scored their final penalty to win the shoot-out. The team will now travel to Scotland again next week, where they will face St Andrews in the next round of the trophy.
Rugby League 1st v Loughborough 2nd
Rugby League continued their brilliant season, with a 51-4 victory over Loughborough 2nd in the BUCS trophy competition. After wet weather forced a late venue change, our team stormed to victory, with a very strong performance. It was one-way traffic in this game, and our team now face a trip to Oxford Brookes next Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
Netball 1st v Chester 1st
Our Netball 1st team have booked their place in the conference cup semi-finals, following a 62-37 victory over Chester. Our team took the lead early on and never looked back, with some great team play. Injuries had resulted in a few team changes, but with such a strong squad, our team remained composed and showed great spirit. They will now face Leeds Beckett 2nd team on Wednesday 2nd March.

Men’s Basketball v Sheffield 1st
Our men’s basketball team join our list of teams who have progressed in the cup, having booked themselves a place in the conference cup semi-finals after a 70-59 victory over Sheffield. Heavy traffic and a delayed match prior to our game meant the fixture started later than scheduled. It took our team a little while to get into the game, but a great team effort meant that we were ahead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. The team will now travel to Bradford for their semi-final fixture on Wednesday 2nd March.
Men’s Rugby Union 2nd v Sheffield 3rd
Finally, our men’s rugby union 2nd team have booked their place in the plate semi-final, following a 17-10 victory over Sheffield 3rd team. It has been a strong season for our team so far and they will look to continue their unbeaten season with a trip to Cumbria in the next round on Wednesday 2nd March.
