After yet another win last week against Edge Hill, our netball 1s took to the court again to take on Chester this time in the BUCS Northern Conference Cup as they try add a cup to what is already a successful season.
The POTM, Becky Airey, brings us the match report!
“Wednesday saw the first team travel to Chester for the cup quarter final in hope of maintaining their unbeaten season and progressing into the semi-finals. After already playing Chester twice in the league we knew that they would come out strong and give us a tough physical game. After the slight delay in arrival of the MMU team, the game finally got underway with a slight change in the starting seven due to Chloe Shepherd picking up an injury last week. The team lined up with Becky Airey (GS), Fran Duffy (GA), Eliza Morgan (WA), Rachel Towell (C), Ruth Anderson (WD), Charlotte Halliwell (GD) and Nancy Thompson (GK).
“The aim of the first quarter was to play safe netball and not take any risks. This tactic paid off with some great turnovers in defence and a patient transition into attack, with safe feeds into the circle and accurate shooting from both Becky and Fran. The team put out a solid first quarter, finishing 15-10.
“Changes to the second quarter saw Kate Thomas come on at WA, Eliza move back to C and Rachel move back to WD. A solid defence with great turnovers from Nancy and Charlotte saw only seven goals scored by the opposition this quarter, allowing the team to more than double their lead with some great passages of play. The second quarter finished 31-17.
“The third quarter saw Ruth come on at WD. Another strong quarter for the girls with Kate Thomas taking most of the centre passes and providing some beautiful feeds into the circle. Some great movement from the shooters, with Fran providing a front ball and Becky a back ball there were no shortage of options. Rachel was able to see the quick ball to Becky beautifully creating plenty of shooting opportunities for us. MMU continued their lead finishing the third quarter 45-25.
“Going into the final quarter Rachel moved back to C, with Charlotte to WD. Another great quarter from the girls saw us push on and increase our lead further. However, Chester never gave up, therefore MMU had to play strong until the final whistle. The final score was 62-37.
“Some fantastic netball shown by all the girls but special shout out to Becky Airey who was Chester’s player of the match stepping up in a position she has little experience playing.
“MMU are now through to the Semi Finals and face Leeds Beckett 2nds on the 2nd March at home.
“Bring it on!”
