#BUCSWednesday: League titles and Cup success!

It was another great week of fixtures for our sports clubs this week, with several teams securing league titles and progressing into the semi-finals of the BUCS Trophy competition.

Here’s our highlights from yesterday’s #BUCSWednesday

MOTD: Golf 1st v Keele University 1st

In our match of the day, our mixed Golf 1st team faced Keele 1st team in their final fixture of the season. With the team requiring a win to secure the league title, they did not disappoint, and finished the season with an emphatic 6-0 victory.

It was a good start for our team with the majority of players taking an early lead over our opponents, resulting in a 5-1 lead. Keele then started to fight back after the 9th hole to make a couple of the games a little bit closer. Our team, feeling determined to secure the title, were able to deal with the pressure, and once the first individual match was won, they wins kept coming with every player winning their match.

This result means that our team have been crowned champions of Northern 3A in their first competitive season. This fantastic result means that the team will start to prepare for their next season in Northern 2A next season.

Men’s Football 1st v Newcastle 1st

It has been a dramatic week for our men’s football 1st team. Atrocious weather conditions over the previous week meant that they were unable to play their second round match before the deadline and the BUCS office had to decide through the toss of coin whether our team or Liverpool John Moores would face Newcastle in the quarterfinals. Our team were the lucky winners of the coin toss, but justified their place in the competition with a well-deserved victory over Newcastle yesterday.

Our team played well throughout the game in a tough contest. Determination and some fantastic team play saw our team come away as the eventual winners, beating Newcastle 3-2. This victory means that our team have secured their place in the semi-final of the BUCS trophy where they will face Nottingham Trent 1st team.

Rugby League 1st v Oxford Brookes 1st

Our men’s rugby league 1st team were also able to secure their place in the semi-final of the BUCS trophy, after a 34 – 24 victory over Oxford Brookes in the quarterfinals. After a delayed start, it was the opposition who took the early lead. Our team immediately fought back to level the score after some great team play. After some close play, out team were able to able to increase their lead and by half time we had gained a 24-12 lead.

During the second half, our team were able to increase their lead further, scoring some excellent tries. Oxford Brookes attempted a late comeback but to no avail, as the final score was 34-24. This result means that that team will now face Nottingham 1st team in the semi-finals next week, the same opposition that the team will face in their promotion play off.

Netball 1st v Lancaster 1st

Our Netball 1st team have continued their impressive season, and following a 47-36 victory over Lancaster, they have been crowned champions of Northern 2A. It was a well-deserved win for our team, who are 12 points clear at the top of the table, with a game to spare and no way back for any of their opponents.

For our team, the focus will now be on the conference cup semi-finals, where they face Leeds Beckett next Wednesday. They will hope to continue their unbeaten run in the league and progress in the cup to help them prepare for next season in Northern 1A.
