#BUCSWednesday: Road to the Conference Cup finals!

It only seems like yesterday that our teams were playing their first round of cup matches, we are now in March and the BUCS Northern Conference Cup finals are only one sleep away!

This year we have three teams who have reached the finals, these will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 9th March, up at Lancaster University. Let’s have a recap on how they got on in their cup campaigns this season!

Men’s Basketball 1s vs Huddersfield 1s

Our Manchester based men’s basketball 1s have had a perfect season so far. They are undefeated in the league and are now hoping to finish off the season winning a league and cup double! Let’s take you back to the start of the season in October where our men’s basketball cup campaign began.

In the first round, they hosted Hull 1s down at Sugden Sports centre, where they were comfortable winners in a 80-55 win to secure their spot into the last 32. A few weeks later, they overcame Sheffield 2s in a convincing 72-47 victory.

In the last sixteen they travelled to Alderton Hall to face Keele 1s. This was a fantastic performance from the team and nearly hit triple figures with their 98-53 win.

After defeating Sheffield 2s in the last 32, our men’s basketball met Sheffield 1s and put in a great shift to bring home a 70-59 victory to Manchester and book their place in the semis! Things were starting to get serious!

Last week they travelled to West Yorkshire to face Bradford in the semi final and what a game it was! Bradford were extremely tough opposition and put up a great fight, however, our men’s basketball came out on top in a closely fought 61-57 win, to secure their place in the final for the first time in over 10 years! This put behind last years disappointment of narrowly missing out on a cup final, where they were beaten by Teeside 1s.

Tomorrow, they face a Huddersfield side who are also having a stormer of a season. They too are undefeated and have already claimed the Northern 2B league title. Huddersfield will no doubt be our toughest opposition this season. Good luck lads, we’ll be rooting for you!

Tip off: 6pm, Lancaster Sport Centre

Netball 1s vs Northumbria 2s

Our Netball 1s are having a season to remember! They have showed great passion and teamwork this year and we couldn’t be prouder! In the first round of the cup, back in October, they travelled to face Durham 2s and came home with a 50-19 victory to start their cup campaign with a bang.

In the second round, Sheffield Hallam 2s travelled to Manchester for a late evening game. Our netball 1s enjoyed a 54-32 victory to send them through to the last 16!

In November, they welcomed their closest rivals, University of Manchester 2s to Sugden Sports centre. A fantastic team effort made sure of victory winning 70-30 to book their place in the quarter finals.

In the quarters they made the trip to Chester. This was a repeat fixture of last year where Chester knocked out our netball 1s, however it was their time to shine, beating them 62-37 to cement their place in the semi finals.

A week after winning the Northern 2A  league title and gaining promotion to the Northern 1A they faced Leeds Beckett 2s at Sugden Sports Centre. Our ladies were well up for this match, bringing a big support with them too and they didn’t disappoint. They proved to be worthy winners beating their opponents 57-39 to book their place in the final in Lancaster.

Tomorrow they face Northumbria 2s, a win here will top of the perfect season and put the disappointment of 2013 behind them where they finished runners up in the cup. Good luck ladies, bring home the cup!

Game starts: 4pm, Lancaster Sport Centre

Men’s Futsal 1s vs Chester 1s

Sitting in pole position at the top of Northern 2A, our new futsal club are having a fantastic first season in BUCS! They have also found themselves in the final of the Northern Conference Cup too!

In the first round they saw off Northumbria 3s in a thrilling 8-6 win to start off their cup campaign. In the quarters, they travelled to the North East again to face Newcastle 1s and again came home with a 12-7 win, securing their place in the semi finals of the cup.

On Sunday they hosted Leeds 1s down at Sugden Sport Centre in an early morning kick off. Our men’s futsal managed to over turn a strong Leeds 4-3 in an entertaining game to join our netball and basketball in the cup finals tomorrow!

In the final they will face Chester 1s who are currently three points behind them in the league in 2nd place. This will be the second time they have faced each other this year. Back in January, they beat Chester 7-4 in the league, they will hope for a repeat victory tomorrow and go on to pick up the cup! Fantastic result this weekend lads and good luck tomorrow!
