#BUCSWednesday: The final day of the season for most teams!

Another BUCS season is drawing to a close, with most teams having played their final games this week. There have been league titles and cup success to celebrate and we are still looking forward to a few final league games, promotion play off matches, the start of the outdoor cricket season and some individual championships!

Here are our highlights from the last big #BUCSWednesday of the season!

BUCS Trophy Final

Men’s Football 1st v Exeter 1st

It was a great day for our men’s football team, who became BUCS Trophy cup champions after beating Exeter 3-2 in a nail-biting encounter. Having been crowned conference cup champions last year, and achieving promotion into Northern 1A, our team have embraced the challenges of the Trophy competition and were emphatic in their victory yesterday.

It was a strong start from our team, and only a great stop form the opposition keeper denied our team from taking and early lead. However, after some further pressure, Danny Bartle was able to slot home to give us the lead before half time.

Exeter came out strong in the second half and piled the pressure on our team, eventually breaking down the strong defence to equalise before the end of the game, forcing the tie into extra time.

It was Essex who gained the advantage in the first half of added time, but our team were able to force the equaliser before the half way point. It was a close second period of extra time, with both teams desperate to make the break through. With just 5 minutes to go, Danny Bartle was able to claim his second goal of the game, giving our team the lead! It was a lead they were not going to let go of and as the final whistle blew, our team were able to celebrate a victory, their second cup trophy in two years and a great end to the season.

Women’s Tennis 1st v Chester 1st

Our women’s tennis team are celebrating back-to-back promotions after a spectacular 12-0 victory over Chester secured the league title. This is a brilliant achievement for the team who have performed well all season. They will now prepare for next season where they will compete in 1A. It was a double celebration for our tennis club yesterday, as the men’s team have also been promoted after securing the Northern 4A title.

Men’s Hockey 2nd v UCLAN

Another team who will be looking forward to a season in Northern 1A are our men’s hockey team. They had to wait until the final day of the season to secure promotion, but an impressive and composed 4-1 victory over UCLAN was enough to seal the league title.

Men’s Volleyball 2nd v Chester 1st

Our men’s volleyball 2nd team had their final fixtures of the season at the weekend. After narrowly missing out on promotion last season, they were determined to step up this year. A win against Chester would be enough to secure promotion, and they worked hard to gain an impressive 2-0 victory.

Men’s Rugby Union 2nd v Salford 1st

It was a great day for our men’s rugby union 2nd team as they were able to beat Salford 1st team 25-10 to succeed in their quest to become league champions. The team still have a game to play, but as they are 10 points clear of their closest competition, they cannot be caught. Our men’s 3rd team only need to turn up to their final game to win their league, so it is likely we will be celebrating further success for the sport within the next week.

With only a handful of fixtures left, we currently have a total of 16 league winners, detailed below, with a couple yet to be decided:
