It’s been just over a month since our last #BUCSWednesday…we were having withdrawal symptoms! Luckily, our men’s rugby league 1s had their first play off match against Nottingham 1s yesterday and what a result it was.
Back in early February, our men’s rugby league were crowned champions of the Northern 1A League for the first time in their clubs history. The emphatic victory meant that we were then in a Premier North Playoff match against the league winners of Midlands 1A, Nottingham 1s. The winner of this match will be then promoted into the Premier North League (the highest Northern league in BUCS!).
After, unfortunately, being knocked out in the semi finals of the BUCS Trophy by Nottingham last month, our lads knew this was going to be a tough fixture.
Our team had a dream start, scoring a well worked team try right through the middle of the posts to give us a 6-0 lead after 2 minutes of play. They then went on to score another after great pressure 5 minutes later to go 10-0 up. After a fantastic start, the lads went from strength to strength, defending well and scoring another 4 tries before half time. At half time the score was 28-0. Nottingham looked well and truly beaten.
However, after an early second half try from MMU, Nottingham started to up their game and dominated in possession scoring two tries in quick succession to make it 34-8. Our side then started to pick up their game and controlled the last 10 minutes adding one more try to their tally. The score finished 41-8, this fantastic result means they will go into the second play off match, 33 points up on aggregate, setting them up nicely!
This match will be played next week away at the Riverside Sports Complex in Nottingham on Wednesday 20th April, 2pm kick off.
Good luck lads, we’ll be rooting for you!
