I’m Ross Sharman, MMU Taekwondo instructor – why there’s never been a better time to join.
Our MMU Taekwondo club has had a year they’ll never forget, going from strength to strength and we have now become the first ever university team to be invited to the Taekwondo World Championships, taking place in Holland in 2017.
This invite was sparked due to the amazing success at the European Championships where four members took 2 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze in Poland this summer. Achieving both gold on the colour belt and black belt days it means the club are now European Champions in both categories, a huge feat for anyone.
Increasing the club’s recognition, as a force to be reckoned with was our British University Taekwondo League participation, where we were crowned the first ever League Champions after beating every single university team.
Seven of team MMU’s participants are ranked in the top 20 competitors in the UK, with 5 of them being unbeaten and previous Club Captain Jack Barker ranked number 1!
These results led to the club hoping for a chance to compete at the World’s stage, the final stepping stone. With these results being recognized the club was invited to enter a team to the World Championships taking place next year in Holland. This recognition has been my dream since starting the club. A previous European Champion, I never got the chance to take things onto the world stage so to see the students do this would be a dream come true for me.
The club is preparing for their biggest year yet, with the acclaimed Charity Fight Night taking place for its second outing on Friday 2nd December there’s plenty for people to get involved in.
The club is open to all practitioners to Taekwondo, not matter style or affiliation, beginners or senior grades. The world championships are open to all grades too, so let’s see if we can get a September starter to be a World Champion! The competing side is only a small part of what we do at MMU Taekwondo, self defense training, fitness and learning the art of Taekwondo take many forms, we have something for everyone. We regularly take part in mixer sessions with other clubs too.
We have two taster sessions coming up:
Tuesday 27th September 6pm-8pm at the Sugden Sports Centre in Activity Room 1 Thursday 29th September 7pm-9pm at the Union (MMU) in the Dance Studio.
In between both tasters is our Welcome Social on Wednesday 28th September at the Union from 8pm.
Come and make history and join MMU Taekwondo.
