Tennis talks: how we got on this week

I’m Alice Scott, vice-captain of the MMU women’s tennis team.

In this week’s matches, the women’s 1st team played the Uni of Liverpool. We had never played them before, as it’s our first year in the Northern 1A but after last week’s loss to Newcastle 1sts, we knew we needed to do well. Our team this week consisted Emma Foster (club chair) Sarah-Kate O’Grady, Beth Adamson and me.

We won the match 8-4 but a lot of the matches were close! Our club chair, Emma said,

“I thought it went really well and gave us confidence going into the cup match v Aberdeen W1’s next. However, it proved our singles is better than our doubles so that will be something we work on in training this week”.

Our men’s team travelled away this week to Lancaster to play their 1sts after last week’s 6-6 draw to Bangor 1sts. The team consisted of Jacob Dunworth, Alexandros Mallidis, James Briers (captain), Max Graham (vice-captain), Will Jones and Alex Moore.

Unfortunately, the boys lost 10-2 with only Jacob Dunworth winning at the number one position. He said,

“I thought the team played really well but we came up against some very good opponents. It’s early in the season and we are still trying to learn each other’s games for the doubles matches but we are getting better each week. I enjoyed getting the singles win because I narrowly lost in a third set tie-break last week.”

Good luck to the men next week as they are away to Leeds Uni M3’s in the Northern Conference Cup!
