I’m Marcus Burgess, an MMU Sport scholar and captain of the men’s first football team
I have been really enjoying the first few months of being an MMU Sport scholar. I’m in my 2nd year studying Sports Management and this is my first year as a scholar.
I have already felt improvements from working with Strength and Conditioning coach Joe Collins – it’s hard work but I’m loving it and seeing the benefit on the field and in the gym which is really useful.
As captain of the football team, we have made an unbeaten league start to the campaign, which is a really successful start to the season. We have a fantastic bunch of lads who both love the sport and social aspect of the team and it’s like one big family.
It is something we can build on and hopefully we can achieve the promotion we all desperately want.
This week I’m also making my debut for the MMU Golf Team away at Keele University which is something I’m looking forward too very much as my second passion after football is golf.
Golf has always been something that has allowed me to take my mind off the pressures of my footballing career over the years and being able to play for the golf team as well as the football team is a fantastic opportunity and hopefully a successful one.
Outside of university, I have recently joined Burscough FC on loan from Salford FC for the upcoming couple of months and in my first three games, already helped the team to their first league win of the season, which was very fulfilling for me as it was great to be already making a positive impact on the team.
My goals for the next few months’ outside university is to try and keep performing personally at a high level which will hopefully result in positive results on the team for the pitch.
MMU’s next home match is Wednesday 16th November and it’ll be at Platt Lane Sports Complex with a 2pm kick off so come down and support the lads!
